Proposed Municipal Budget - Public hearing on May 26

The proposed 2020-2021 Municipal Budget is now available (click here for a copy) and the public hearing on it is scheduled for May 26, 2020 (mark your calendar!)

The only way the taxpayers can ensure their tax dollars are spent wisely and efficiently is for each and every tax paying resident to review the proposed budget and provide comments and questions BEFORE it is considered and voted on by the Mayor and Council. The Mayor and Council will not have any reason to question and alter the proposed budget (if necessary) if the taxpaying residents do not make their voices heard at the public hearing with specific questions and comments on specific line items in the budget.

For example and consideration while reviewing the proposed budget:

  • Are the Borough's revenue projections, including a $400,000 projected increase, reasonable in light of the current state of the economy? If the projections are too optimistic, it can cause the Borough significant financial problems.

  • Will North Caldwell residents continue to pay approximately $50,000 a year for the personal health insurance for a handful of its elected officials? Should public officials officials derive a personal benefit from their public service?

  • What are the details of the "other expenses" referenced numerous times in the proposed budget without any explanation?

  • In light of an "emergency appropriation" of $45,000 in 2019 for legal fees (a 25% increase of the initial 2019 budgeted legal fees, as well as a 43% increase in legal fees since 2018), what is the basis for the projected decrease in legal fees to below pre-2018 levels?
